KSM32 Studio Microphone

An embossed single-diaphragm, side-address, cardioid condenser microphone for highly critical studio recording and live sound productions. The Shure KSM32 offers an extended frequency response for an open, natural sounding reproduction of the original sound source.

Features

  • KSM32/CG - Charcoal Gray, with swivel mount and carrying case, phantom power required
  • KSM32/SL - Champagne, with swivel mount, shock mount, aluminum case, phantom power required
  • Class A, transformerless preamplifier circuitry eliminates cross-over distortion for improved linearity across the full frequency range.
  • Embossed, high-compliance diaphragm provides extended low-frequency response.
  • Ultra-thin, gold-layered, low-mass, Mylar diaphragm for excellent transient response
  • 15 dB attenuation switch for handling extremely high sound pressure levels (SPL)
  • Switchable low-frequency filter provides greater flexibility to reduce background noise or to counteract proximity effect.
  • Integrated three-stage pop protection grille reduces "pop" and other breath noise
  • Internal shock mount reduces transmission of handling noise
  • Replacement cartridge:  RK374

Performance Characteristics

  • Extended frequency response
  • Very low self-noise
  • Exceptional low-frequency reproduction
  • High output level
  • High input SPL capability
  • No cross-over distortion
  • Extremely uniform polar response
  • Superior common mode rejection and suppression of radio frequency interference

Applications

Some typical applications for the KSM32 are listed below. Microphone use, however, is a matter of personal taste. The KSM32 may be used for a variety of applications other than those listed.

  • Voice -- solo, background, voice-over, broadcasting
  • Acoustic instruments -- such as piano, guitar, drums, percussion, strings
  • Wind instruments -- brass and woodwind
  • Low frequency instruments -- such as double bass, electric bass, kick drum
  • Overhead miking -- drums or percussion
  • Ensembles -- choral or orchestral
  • Room ambiance pick-up -- guitar amplifier or drums

Both the acoustic environment and microphone placement have significant effects on the sound obtained when miking a source. You may need to experiment with these variables to achieve the best overall sound for each application.

User Guides

SHURE MICROPHONES - Large Diaphragm

A selection of large diaphragm microphone from Shure, including cardioid, multi-pattern, and dual diaphragm models. Often found in professional recording studios, these condenser microphones deliver 'smooth and neutral' sound reproduction.

KSM32C Cardioid

Shure KSM32C is a cardioid microphone that features a 0.75-inch capsule with embossed Mylar diaphragm. This enables the microphone to deliver a smooth, balanced response and 'exceptional' low-frequency performance that is more common in 1-inch capsule designs. Shure have designed the microphone for for vocals, instruments, drum overheads, and ensembles, and it is available in two bundled kits for studio and stage applications. KSM32C has a tuned cardioid pattern that delivers a high level of off-axis rejection (up to 37db down at 180 degrees), allowing a more focussed pickup on the source required and not surrounding instruments.

Versions

KSM32C/HM Stage Kit includes a hard mount, premium case and flocked foam windscreen
KSM32C/SM Studio Kit includes a shock mount, magnetic pop filter, premium case and threaded adapter.

Frequency range: 20Hz - 20kHz. Sensitivity: -36dBV. Self-noise: 11dBA. Maximum sound pressure: 140dB SPL, 5000ohm load, no pad; 155dB SPL, 5000ohm load, with 15dB pad. Output impedance: 70ohms, +/-5. Power requirement: 48V phantom. Weight: 265g

KSM40C Cardioid

Designed for capturing vocals and instruments, including upright bass, guitar amps and kick drum, KSM40C is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone that features a 'precision-engineered' 1-inch capsule allowing a natural sound with rich low-frequency and high-frequency detail. A proprietary backplate design controls diaphragm behaviour, eliminating sharp resonances. The uniform cardioid polar pattern focuses the source while minimising room and bleed, making placement fast and predictable in multi-mic sessions or less-than-ideal spaces, and smooth proximity effect gives more creative control. An included shock mount and pop filter isolate the microphone from rumble and vibration and block plosives. Also includes a hard mount, a premium case, and a threaded adapter.

Frequency range: 20Hz - 20kHz. Sensitivity: -33.5dBV. Self-noise: 7.5dBA. Maximum sound pressure: 138dB SPL, 5000ohm load, no pad; 153dB SPL, 5000ohm load, with 15dB pad. Output impedance: 70ohms, +/-5. Power requirement: 48V phantom. Weight: 285g

KSM44MP Multipattern

Featuring selectable polar patterns including cardioid, omnidirectional, and bidirectional, Shure KSM44MP is a dual-diaphragm design with 1-inch capsule. The microphone has been designed to delivers natural clarity and a gentle, high-frequency lift that enhances subtle details while remaining smooth - therefore employing in modern production styles of airy vocal texture, subtle overtones, and delicate instrumentation is recommended by Shure. The dual-diaphragm architecture stabilises sensitivity and pattern consistency, improving off-axis control at low frequencies for cleaner multi-mic results. An included shock mount and pop filter isolate the microphone from rumble and vibration and block plosives. Also includes a premium case, a hard mount, and a threaded adapter for a complete accessories suite.

Frequency range: 20Hz - 20kHz. Sensitivity: --30dBV, cardioid; -35dBV, omnidirectional/bidirectional. Self-noise: 5dBA, cardioid; -7dBA, omnidirectional; 8dBA, bidirectional. Maximum sound pressure: 135dB SPL, 5000ohm load, no pad; 150dB SPL, 5000ohm load, with 15dB pad. Output impedance: 47ohms, +/-5. Power requirement: 48V phantom. Weight: 295g
