TASCAM HEADPHONE AMPLIFIERS - MH-8

Intended for use in studio and stage installations, the MH-8 has eight stereo output channels, each offering 250 mW of power to left and right channels. Each output channel may be fed from a choice of two global stereo inputs or a direct input dedicated to that channel. The amplifier is a rack-mounting device, taking 1u of rack space.

The front panel has, from the left, a power switch with adjacent LED indicator, and two rotary controls to set the levels of the two main stereo inputs. Each has LEDs to show signal presence and overload. Eight blocks of facilities follow, each corresponding to one stereo output channel.

Each block has a 6.35mm stereo jack socket output, a rotary volume control and LEDs to show signal presence and overload. There are four push switches. Three choose between the two main inputs and the direct input; the fourth switches the channel to mono.

On the rear there are eight pairs of 6.35mm, 3-pole jack sockets, providing the left and right 'direct' inputs to the eight output channels. Each jack socket is balanced. In each case, if only the 'left' socket has a connection, that signal will be fed to both channels. The next block of four sockets are also balanced, providing left and right 'foldback' outputs to lInk the two main sources out to further equipment.

Next are the connections for the main inputs. Input one has both a pair of 3-pole female XLR connectors and a pair of 6.35mm, 3-pole jack sockets, all balanced, all line level, providing a choice of connectors for the left and right inputs. Only one input connector should be used per channel. If only the 'left' jack socket has a connection, then that signal will be fed to both channels unless there is a jack plug in the 'right' socket. Input 2 has both a pair of 3-pole female XLR connectors, balanced, line level, and a pair of RCA (phono) sockets to attach lower level signals. To the right of these, there is a ground terminal and ground lift switch adjacent to an IEC mains power inlet.

XLR and jack inputs: +4dBu nominal, +24dBu maximum, balanced, 56k ohms. RCA (phono) inputs: -10dBu nominal, +10dBu maximum, unbalanced, 22k ohms. Foldback outputs: +4dBu nominal, +24dBu maximum, balanced, 94 ohms. Headphone outputs: 2x 250mW at 32 ohms. Response: 20Hz-50kHz, +/-3dB. headphones; 10Hz-100kHz, +/-3dB foldback. Distortion: Better than 0.05% THD. Channel separation: Better than 50dB A, phones output, within an output channel. Crosstalk: Better than 65dB A. Power source: 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz, 36W.
